Setting
Map of France
The setting of The Scarlet Pimepernel is in England and France during the reign of terror after the French Revolution. The exact time is 1789. We don't know where exactly in England but somewhere in a pub off the coast. You would think that considering the book is about the French Revolution that it would take place in France, in the thick of it, however it takes place in England because the people are smart and know it is not safe in France because they are vaguely related to an Aristocrat. Namely Louis-Antoine St. Just, who is Margurites cousin. That makes this book fascinating because Orczy actually uses historical people and events in his book. Some of the events actually happened. Unlike Charles Dickens a Tale of Two Cities who uses no real people or events.
